Project Solution

The upgrade was carried out in two phases. The first phase, which began in early 2020, included the reconstruction of the main runway and the upgrading of the approach lighting system. The second phase, which began in early 2021, included upgrading the airfield and ground lighting system and constructing a new electrical substation.

This was funded by a combination of public and private investment. The Irish government provided €20 million in funding, and the remaining €20 million was raised through a public-private partnership (PPP).

Thanks in part to the quick and on-time delivery of the requested materials from Radius Systems CTS, the upgrade was completed on time and within budget. The new runway is now able to handle more traffic, and the new lighting systems have improved safety at the airport. The new electrical substation has also helped to ensure that the airport has a reliable power supply.

This project future-proofs a critically important strategic asset for Cork, the south-west region, and for Ireland for many years to come.
